OpenBSD on the notebook
hi
is it a good idea to install und use OpenBSD with KDE or Gnome on the notebook ? I'd like to install OpenBSD 4.4 on EEEPC 1000H from Asus. my EEEPC 1000H has wireless chipset: RALINK RT2860 and Ethernet adapter: Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E kind regards ccc Last edited by ccc; 3rd November 2008 at 01:50 AM. |

Those devices are typically called netbooks now, which are generally just small laptops.. the majority of OpenBSD developers use laptops.
http://www.openbsd.org/i386-laptop.html documents some of the available choices, it's selection of "Eee PC's" is rather vauge though.. But really, the first thing one should do is check the mailing lists.. http://marc.info/?t=122151386700001&r=1&w=2 With one of these newer devices, following -CURRENT might be necessary.. this seems to indicate the wired Ethernet may be one of the unsupported Attansic chipsets. The wireless on the other hand, might work.. with ACPI enabled.. In essence, you may have a little work on your hands.. trying to get everything working as desired. Have fun. |

I have the older (& smaller...) 701 with a 800x480 7-inch screen, & I run the lighter weight Fluxbox window manager on it. For the most part, the non-standard screen size isn't a problem, but there are dialog boxes within applications such as OpenOffice & Adobe Reader which do not size well; the top or bottom of some windows will be cut off. This doesn't have to be catastrophic; I have learned that these dialogs can be moved up or down (even if the caption bar is obscured...) to expose needed options or buttons. |

I've booted EEEPC 1000H using OpenBSD LiveCD kde.i386.4.4.3.iso,
but the wired Ethernet: Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E seems to be not supported. is it possible to install OpenBSD 4.4 at the moment without wired Ethernet and install later only just a driver ? is it only a simple installation or I must build a new kernel for this driver ?
