Picked a cheap (because the LCD has some damage) ASUS P50IJ. Way better specs than I was hoping to get. Touchpad, wifi, audio all work. Tried the camera and the image was upside down and green (color might be a result of whatever caused the screen damage, I don't know) but have no use for it, myself. I disabled apmd because it suspended itself once over night and I couldn't wake it back up.

My OpenBSD laptop is not very inspiring but has proven very functional.
My mother finally upgraded her Dell Inspiron 1501, which is an AMD Sempron 3500+ machine. Performance as-is with Windows XP was pretty awful. I replaced the hard drive with a Samsung SSD, and upgraded the DDR2 memory to 4GB. And of course, I upgraded the OS Works very nicely as a desktop/browse/code machine. The CPU is awful (single core 1.8Ghz), but abundant(ish) memory and a speedy SSD make it capable. It doesn't handle HTML5 videos (e.g., going to YouTube) very well, however...not sure if that's simply a horsepower thing or something not configured correctly. There's a writeup with pics on my blog. Code:

Clevo laptop, bought as a barebones from rjtech.com works without any problems--on rare occasions, the Realtek ethernet card will fail to get a DHCP address, but most of the time, I use the iwn0 wireless card. Sound also works.
HD4000 Intel video card, Intel Centrino 6230-N wireless card RTL8168 ethernet card. Not sure of the audio, pcidump shows it as Intel 7 Series HD Audio, i7 processor. My other laptop, an Asus UX31E Zenbook also works but its wireless, an Atheros AR9485 doesn't work. The USB to ethernet dongle does work, it's seen as axe0. OBSD 5.4 & configured my wifi on my old Advent 9112 notebook.
Dual core 1.46GHz 1.5GB Ram 12.1" TFT Ralink Wifi (using 'rum' driver) Problem with built in touchpad after setting up wifi, worked before, but I'm not too worried as I tend to use a USB mouse anyway, & that works OK.

Having trouble with the brightness Quote:

Currently, I'm using OpenBSD 5.6-stable on my Lenovo Thinkpad T430 and everything I care about is working out-of-the-box. <:
|
|

On my laptop brightness did not require any keymapping. Key Fn + BrightnessUP/BrightnessDOWN worked out of the box I suspect it is hard wired.

I'm using OpenBSD since mid January (before I was using FreeBSD) and I'm really loving the experience so far. I want to thank you and all other OpenBSD developers who work hard and, most of the time, for free to make the best OS you know. <: |

Nevermind, I don't why I associated your username with bcallah@.

Now with OBSD 5.6 on my old Advent 9112 notebook.
Dual core 1.46GHz 1.5GB Ram 12.1" TFT Ralink Wifi (using 'rum' driver) (Problems with built in touchpad, and usb mouse at times, but once active it is OK.)

Take a lot of time to answer questions on this site. I most certainly don't have the time to post as much as he does. We could use a few more of him, not just on this site but on the mailing lists too. He also maintains two ports in the OpenBSD ports tree (though I'll note one of them is out of date ) http://portroach.openbsd.org/josh%20...ip.net%3E.html |
|
||||
Yup. And an updated port is sitting here, waiting for the ports tree to unlock so I can submit it. Currently, I have a local patch to upstream's install.sh script because they changed a directory name but forgot to modify the script -- documentation gets dropped. I've reached out to upstream *twice* -- no response received.
If you'd like to review/test/comment before the ports tree unlocks, here's the diff. I'll take comments. |
