Exclamation DHCP Cable Connection Fail

Hello everybody,

I'm new to *BSD systems, although I have 2 years of intense Linux (Debian) experience. I always found easily how to connect my Scientific Atlanta Webstar 2000 Series DHCP modem into debian...I already researched for many man pages, tutorials and the official FAQ, and couldn't make my cable modem to work. I already created/edited the file /etc/hostname.vr0, and my 'dhclient vr0' just get "no link...........sleeping"

Can you please help me? I need this computer to my job!

We'll need a little more information, a dmesg and ifconfig output would be useful.

Sorry, I really forgot to include those. In 'dmesg', what I got about the modem is:

cdce0 at uhub2 port 2 configuration 1 interface 0 "Askey Computer product 0x4501" rev 1.10/1.01 addr 2
cdce0: interface alternate setting 0 failed

and ifconfig:

vr0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
lladdr 00:30:18:10:40:da
media: Ethernet autoselect (none)
status: no carrier

If some more information is needed, tell me that I'll get it.

  1. A complete dmesg might be more helpful.
  2. Your error message is indicative of a hardware compatibility problem. The man page for cdce(4) says of the message:
    Quote:
...errors [of this class] indicate that the bridge is not compatible with the driver.
  3. No discussion of this error has occured on the misc@ mailing list.
  4. The project's bug tracking application is not operational at the moment, so I am unable to search for open or closed PRs.
  5. There have been no updates to the main driver source code (src/sys/dev/usb/if_cdce.c) since 4.5-release.

It looks like you're confused, cdce(4) and vr(4) are unrelated.. it seems likely that vr0 is an embedded Ethernet controller that's you're not using.

If that is your Cable modem showing up as cdce0, then that is the interface you should try using.. can show us the output of ifconfig cdce0?

Does your Cable modem have an Ethernet port as well? if so, please use that instead of connecting it via the USB port.. this is the traditional way of doing things.

Note; in the future.. post the full output in

blocks.

EDIT: Now that I see cdce0 may be failing upon attach, it may not be a compatible chipset.. i.e: the driver attached accidentally.. so please use the Ethernet port on your modem if available, if it is not.. seek a replacement modem from your ISP.
