Question log in to console and startx in os x

Yeah, how do I do this? I like to use bsd, but I like os x and don't want to create a dual partition. besides, darwin bsd is a hobby of mine. So, I "login" as >console, which drops me into a text based interface. Cool right? well I have X11.app, but when I do startx it tells me there was an error and I think it was errno 61, but I'll check. I also tried using macports to install xorg, and it gave me the same error when i used /opt/local/bin/startx , so the problem probably isn't in X11. I get a similar problem when I use links -g. any idea what's going on here?

startx gives errno 3 and links -g says it can't connect to display 0:0 and says something about graphic drivers.

Never used Darwin myself But Xorg is supposed to be the same on all platforms isn't it?

You could first check if you have both startx and Xorg installed with
Code:
$ which startx
$ which Xorg
If those two commands give the locations of these two files, you could start X configuration (you need to be root) with
Code:
# Xorg -configure
This will create an Xorg config file. Follow the directions to test the generated Xorg configuration file. This test writes to the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.logand usually offers some insight of what went wrong

Or try
Code:
# which X
And then
Code:
# X -configure

The port of X that you find for OS X or Darwin is hosted from within the proprietary Apple GUI, it does not have it's own drivers for hardware.. it cannot be started directly from a console.

If you want a console and *real* 2D/3D Xorg, you can use that BootKit thing to install either the i386 or amd64 port of OpenBSD (..or Net/Free).

Didn't see my post?

EDIT: I meant Boot Camp or w/e they call it.. the x86 BIOS emulation that allows you to boot unmodified i386/amd64 operating systems.

I saw it. I will not be dissuaded! Unix is all-powerful! It can do anything I set my mind to! I believe I mentioned that I don't want a dual partition. If I wanted to install another system, I would have done it a long time ago. I will make this work if I have to compile Xorg bit by bit! like it says, I am completely obsessed and clueless, so don't try to stop me! not that you are, I'm just saying that I'll get it to work someday.

It's not as if you can toggle a few options and get it to work.. you'll need to write supporting code, and possibly even modify the kernel.

I take it from your post that you are trolling here, but perhaps you really are just a clueless geek.

Carry on, post kernel and Xorg patches when you're done.. surely others will enjoy an X environment on OS X/Darwin.

Gee, I didn't mean it like that. I'm not that good, or I wouldn't have asked for help. I will try everything I know, because I may not be as clueless as I seem, but I am obsessed. And if it really does involve so much work, I can learn how to do it, but that's why I ask guys like you, guys that probably know more than me. Honestly, I like to kid! I didn't mean to insult or make anyone angry.
