What have we BSD users become? Using Wine just to get flash support, man...this infuriates me that we have to resort to this. Adobe needs to get their heads out of their asses.

Not having flash is the only reason I'm running Linux on my notebook now. As others have said, I don't need Flash but it's convenient for certain things I want to see that are presented in that format.

Yes, the agreement lets PC-BSD ship with linux-flashplugin7 pre-installed. Until recently it was fairly touch and go getting flash to work at all under PC-BSD releases; even after that deal IMHO. Although much of that might be because only a few people know how to use the bloody nspluginwrapper....... Or it could be changes in the Linux ABI, beats me.
Because of the lack of a workable Linux Flash9 for FreeBSD 6.3 they took to creating PBI that combine IE or FF or Opera with WINE and Flash 9 for Windows. I personally am against this practice, except when it is required for business reasons (e.g. web-dev testing their pages in IE6 ), but it's their project. And infuriatingly, pcbsd.org now has a flash ad for PC-BSD 7 !!!!

I've not been able to find any update on the matter though. Fingers crossed |

This article and other like it have been making the rounds all week. But if you go to the adobe labs site that has the 64 version there is no sign of a FreeBSD version...i just don't get it.

I understand I that. I guess the fact that they are talking about it but won't release a beta for testing doesn't make sense to me.
If you go here the linux version(s) and other for flash 10 are here, but no FreeBSD. This is almost like the found "Bigfoot" stories of recent weeks.

The FreeBSD test might have been "In The Labs", not public.

I'm running both flash plugin and Opera via Linux ABI (just for viewing flash stuff). It isn't satisfactory. Half of the stuff isn't working, outdated flash version. Youtube goes into sound-video desync all the time. Try running some 15+ MB applet (online games and such), and boom there goes your browser.
We need native support. BSD systems have a small, but constant user-base that isn't going to migrate on Linux just because Linux has some desktop-stuff solved better. |

If it was better we would migrate years ago ...

I'm just saying that Linux has some drivers, programs and games that aren't available OOTB for BSD. Flash is one of those things.

Whether anyone likes to admit it or not, Linux has become the dominant platform for Unix(-like) development. The only way to get Linux-only programs to run on Unix platforms is through a compatibility layer. Implementing an ABI layer better than the original Linux ABI is the best way to go.

I use CURRENT daily, but I'm not bold enough to enable linuxulator.
|

I'm willing to, but it'll have to wait about 8 days because I won't be home until then, and I'm not bold enough to tamper with my server-desktop over SSH, since it provides many files for me (over 60 GBs worth) that I wouldn't want on my desktop.
