Question Rebuilding kernel: ath_hal error

Hello there,

I'm trying to rebuild my kernel in order to include support for my Atheros wireless network card. This produces an error.

Isn't there a module you can bind to the kernel with kldload(8)?
That way no kernel recompilation is needed

Next time, if you still have the GENERIC config file around, you could make things easier by showing a context diff instead of showing the complete configuration

May I decide what I want to do with FreeBSD and how I want to use it? Thank you. I drown in compilation error output, so how would I know what you in particular find relevant?

I already found out about AH_SUPPORT_AR5416 (I have no AR5416 though). The kernel compiles fine now but hangs half way through the booting process.

Or is it just a (temporary) hang during the startup scripts? Many times a tempory hang is caused by a failing forward or reverse DNS lookup.

You disabled IPv6 in your kernel. If something is trying to do a IPv6 lookup that could add some considerable delay. And some things like the pf packet filter probably will not work at all without IPv6 support.

You also have to be careful with disabling SCSI stuff, drivers for optical devices like CD use a SCSI emulation layer.

Some more details, at least when the kernel displays something, would be helpful

I found it myself! Wow, this part now works and I can boot FreeBSD-8.0 on my laptop, displaying nice fonts in a much nicer framebuffer window.

I now have a very slim and super speedy kernel. Dit is geil!

Congratulations with your working kernel

Could you be so kind to post here the diff -u output of your working kernel config? That way others can learn from it too.

You also could post some details about your laptop, (Manufacturer, model nr etc) and the complete dmesg output in our FreeBSD laptop discussion thread.

Question Strange things are happening

I just don't like loading stuff on my computer that I don't need. Whether or not it becomes faster by doing so, I wouldn't really know. I am not especially focused on: faster, better, more, etc. The point is that I like to control and understand what I'm doing and I like my own custom environment.

Re: autism

Actually it should be: Asperger's Syndrome (which is basically the same as: classical autism combined with a high IQ, although I am not particularly concerned about IQs because one can not directly measure people's actual intelligence and then express it using exact numbers). Besides, IQ is no measure at all for how well one performs in real life society and apart form that, there are many types of "IQ". Anyway ...

As soon as I have everything working the way it should (according to myself) I will post diff's, etc. Strange things still happen for now:

Some reasons why it is forbidden to build a custom kernel:

* You do not need to, normally: but I want to learn and experiment. Define "normal".
* You will not get a faster system: I don't care. Define "fast".
* You are likely to make a less reliable machine: define "less reliable".
* You will not get any support from developers: is that logical?
* You will be expected to reproduce any problem with a GENERIC kernel before developers take any problem report seriously: I might be expected to fly to the moon as well before eating tofu :-)).
* Users and developers will laugh at you when you break your system: is that "civilized"?
* Custom compiler options usually do a better job of exposing compiler problems than improving system performance: then create a better compiler.

Being a first time user, I have come quite far, so far, playing with FreeBSD 8.0 for a couple of days. Wi-Fi now works fine. Very fast and robust TCP/IP stack! Compiling source code goes smoothly and quickly, compared to other OSs.

It would be nice though for the on-line handbook to reflect the dramatic changes that occurred between 7 and 8 with regard to wireless networking.

Still, my custom kernel hangs and everything freezes, but this time right after netif. How can I use the debugging stuff that is compiled into the kernel to find out what happens?

The only reason why I referred you to the OpenBSD FAQ about custom kernels, is that I wanted to show, that according to the OpenBSD people, a smaller kernel doesn't bring you advantages in speed.
You don't need to believe them

You are using FreeBSD, which has a huge number of developers and resources compared with the much smaller OpenBSD project. Just compare the number of FreeBSD ports with the number of OpenBSD ports.

The OpenBSD developers rather spend time on improving OpenBSD than solving custom kernel compilation problems on the mailing lists.
In their opinion, decreasing kernel size is not relevant nowadays. People now have a couple of gigabytes of memory in their machines.

I never used the debugging stuff, so in this respect I cannot be of any help

If I would want a smaller kernel with ath support compiled in, I would start by just adding the ath stuff in a fresh kernel config.
If that works fine, then I would remove kernel support for network interface cards I don't and never will have. Then I would use this kernel for a while and see how that goes.

If you change one single option in a working kernel and this makes your kernel hang, then you know the cause. If you change a lot of options at one time, and you get a hang, it is rather difficult to figure out, which change triggered the hang.
