you can easily label it in MS-Windows.

in fbsd you can add a label while formating: newfs_msdos -L label ...

Ah, gotcha. Thank you, I'll check it out.

Is there a way to go back and reference what labels apply to? I can look in /dev/ufs to see what I've created so far, but how do I know what they are "linked to" for lack of a better term?

Edit: looks like maybe

# geom LABEL list

might be what I need.

Ah yes, that's much cleaner. Thanks again, you've been a great help with this. I'll have to thank you personally next time I'm in... Nuh, India? (that was a complete guess)

I've been trying this for a few days now and it doesn't seem to want to work for me

I'm not getting any errors.

and GEOM_PART_GPT and GEOM_LABEL are compiled into my kernel. The is FreeBSD 7.

It seems that once I reboot the labels disappear from the disks. Any pointers?

do you mean: when you run tunefs -L ... the label is detected by geom_label but after a reboot the label doesn't get detected?

yes. At first i was getting the message that the label was removed when I exited single user mode. The I put geom_label_load in boot/loader.conf and I don't get that message, but it does not read the label.

thats odd. i am not sure whats causing this.
currently, i am running fbsd 6.3 so i can't test this.
in case your running a custom perhaps you could try the default kernel.
