Realtime BSD for CAM
[reposting from BSD Forums]
Hello everyone, I was courious as to whether FreeBSD can be used as a realtime (as I understand it, hard-realtime) solution for CAM (specifically, controlling cutting machines). A BSD box would be used as a dedicated controller, so all it would have to do is receive a bunch of data (from a network), run a custom software to send signals to the cutting machine (a realtime problem, since the machines have strict time restrictions) and send periodic progress reports back through the network to an operator. Thanks. |

Out of box FreeBSD (one which you get from internet) should not be considered hard realtime operating system, although as of 6.0 and beyond FreeBSD kernel is PREEMPTIVE but it is not yet FULLY PREEMPTIVE (various kernel parts are still under Giant Locks and other stuff ....). There are of course embemdded propiertary software which take use of FreeBSD.
Google for more information. |
