Default Computer as a remote?

Is there such a thing as remote control software? Over the past few days I've been looking for something kind of like LIRC in reverse....that would allow you to control an electronic device using a computer with an IrDa output and the hex codes listed on remotecentral.com but haven't had much luck. As a collector of old electronic junk (projectors, stereos, laserdisc players, etc...) it would be a handy thing to have. Short sighted manufacturers usually make critical setup features only available on the (original, discontinued) remote, and computer programmable remotes are outrageously expensive. So has some one done this yet or not?

Yes, it is part of lirc. Jump off to the lirc web site and you will find instructions to create a com-port device with a D connector, IR LED, resistor and bit of wire. Or a little more if you want to be less kludgy.
