unicode issue
Hi everybody !
much thanks and respect to those behind this wonderful mine of daemon lore called daemonforums I am actually an openbsd newbie and my current problem is : * I cannot save pages whose titles are in unicode but can read the pages if titles are saved otherwise * I cannot export .profile aliases for use on fvwm .. yet they work when off X .. this happens both for ksh and bash .. I am openbsd 5.0 stable .. .. thank you so much .. daemonhawks .. |

X Window need to be told that the xterms are login shells:
Code:
$ cat .Xdefaults XTerm*loginShell:true

thank you so much *j65NKO* !!
I created the .Xdefaults file then added the line (which actully existed in /root) it works fine now the unicode issue I installed most foreign fonts from ports and I did a : xset fp+ /usr/local/lib/X11/fonts/fontname xset fp rehash yet I can't neither save pages in their respective unicode titles not can I view unicode in lynx , my favourite browser .. one last question please : I favour fvwm and golem over other wms/desktops , how can I shift layouts between english and japanese , for instance ? sorry to say I came from a wretched windows background ; the more I use bsd variants the more I feel reborn afresh .. being unix == being true and genuine |

Hi Daemon Nerds !!
I can use aliases on xterm but not on konsole .. how can I set this for all installed terminals (konsole / terminal / urxvt ) mlterm on openbsd 5.0 stable seems to be buggy as it freezes after the dialog box shows .. I tried installing it both via pkg_add and ports .. Thanks in advance |

You don’t need mlterm for Unicode; a regular xterm should suffice, provided your environment variables are set correctly. I wrote a tutorial for this some time ago.
UTF‐8 support in the default ksh is weak. Typing and pasting characters work as expected, but both backspacing and cursor movement break horribly. mksh supports Unicode in emacs mode only (not vi mode… ☹). Bash should work normally. I recommend setting up a compose file for Unicode characters that you use often, but this is impractical for other languages like Greek (beyond the occasional math character) or Japanese. Unfortunately, though I know the capabilities exist, I have never figured out how to enable them—X is woefully lacking in documentation. You may want to look into things like Anthy. I know that at least a couple OpenBSD developers are Japanese, so I presume somebody has it working.

Thank you BackRow !!
that was an excellent tutorial .. and your nickname took me back to Mac days when I used to relax lazily watching movies on FrontRow with single click! and yet I love the Mplayer Way .. compact and clean .. .. I wonder if there could be a way to make Lynx unicode-aware .. same for snownews .. then one can spend much time off X .. |
