Default Choppy video playback

Hello again,

Another day, another problem

Video playback is somewhat choppy. VLC plays fine but has a weird audio problem where all mono sounds (voices) only come out the left speaker and the right only sound effects. Only with ac3 (a52) sound though.
So far I tried mplayer, xine and mpv and with those players it's somewhat choppy. It's not bad but noticeable.

I've got a radeon hd6570 with glamor, dri3 and tearfree switched on. Is this card too old/slow to play 1080p?
My system is an i7-930.

Regarding choppy play, have you tried changing the setting in VLC/preferences/video/output? And in Xine's preferences? Changing it with mpv is done by adding vo = desired format in ~/.mpv/config. The list of available formats is in man mpv. I forget if the output setting can be changed in mplayer with the GUI.

With VLC the video is fine, it's the audio acting strange. I tried loads of different settings in mpv and mplayer but it didn't help

I tried a second hand Radeon 6970. I didn't use it long enough to test video, as the fan screamed like a jet engine. How are you handling fan control? I ended up buying a new old stock fanless Radeon 6450, for about $50 and it works great. My screen resolution is 1920x1200.

I wonder if your problem is it is running in software mode, because you haven't added the radeon firmware from the OpenBSD site. Do you have radeondrm-firmware installed?

Yep, the fan is extremely annoying. So annoying that I disconnected it from the board
That's not the problem, I tested it with the fan first.
I do have the firmware, it installs automatically when you install (update) openbsd.
I have my eye on a radeon 6970. It's, as far as I know, the fastest card openbsd supports

Hmmm... If you post your dmesg more experienced people might be able to see what is wrong.

I saw a post on the OpenBSD forum on Reddit where a dude said you don't need a powerful card for OpenBSD. You only need that kind of thing if you are on Windows. The games you can get on OpenBSD aren't really resource hungry.

My 6450 runs silent and cool. If you are looking to get one, I found it on UK Ebay 6 months to a year ago. I'm pretty sure the seller bought it from Amazon UK and then sold it to me for $10 profit. lol

Have you set up permission to use hardware acceleration? In /etc/fbtab you should see /dev/drm0 listed in the relevant line for whatever tty you're logged in on (/dev/ttyC0 on my system).

I use an old motherboard with onboard radeon HD3200/RS780 and it copes fine with mplayer.
(admittedly on a smaller screen at 1440x900, but my graphics hardware is pretty low end).

You can check if acceleration is being used by looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

I'm not a gamer but I do like to watch high quality video. It's usually in full hd (1920x1080). Files are around 4.5gb for 45 minutes.
I got my card from ebay as well, especially for openbsd. Paid £20 for mine.
Maybe choppy video was exaggerated but it's not as smooth as it should be.

Dmesg, as requested

No, I don't have a line like that in my fstab

Not fstab, /etc/fbtab is the file you want.

Oops, break out the reading glasses

I think it does mention drm in there

Code:
 #
 $OpenBSD: fbtab.head,v 1.2 1999/05/05 06:56:34 deraadt Exp $
# login(1) reads this file to determine which devices should be chown'd to
# the new user. Format is:
# login-tty perm device:[device]:...
/dev/ttyC0 0600 /dev/console:/dev/wskbd:/dev/wskbd0:/dev/wsmouse:/dev/wsmouse0:/dev/ttyCcfg:/dev/drm0
# samples
#/dev/ttyC0 0600 /dev/fd0

Ok, you have /dev/drm0 listed. What does /var/log/Xorg.0.log say about acceleration? Look for lines mentioning acceleration method (EXA on mine), DRI2 and AIGLX. I see this in my Xorg.0.log:
Code:
(II) RADEON(0): Acceleration enabled

Some more info

Code:

Code:
(II) RADEON(0): Use GLAMOR acceleration
There should be other messages which will tell you if it is actually using it. I see lines like:
Code:
[ 17.978] (II) EXA(0): Driver registered support for the following operations:
[ 17.978] (II) Solid
[ 17.978] (II) Copy
[ 17.978] (II) Composite (RENDER acceleration)
[ 17.978] (II) UploadToScreen
[ 17.978] (II) DownloadFromScreen
[ 17.979] (II) RADEON(0): Acceleration enabled
followed soon after by a lot of lines about AIGLX.

That's what xorg.conf is telling it to do. You still need to check in Xorg.0.log that it's actually doing it.

It looks like acceleration is working. Don't know what else to suggest.

Thanks for your help.
I'll try some different settings in the xorg conf file and if that doesn't help I'm getting another graphics card

The other thing I did is I played around with the settings on mpv to get it working correctly. Here is my mpv.conf. The first line might be relevant to your problem.
