Default Lower Load Cycle Count of a TOSHIBA MQ02ABF100 ?

Hello !

I have here a TOSHIBA MQ02ABF100 1 TB harddisc which produces round 45 Load Cycle Counts per hour (tried over a time of round 3 hours where the machine was not used). Is this normal or is there a way to reduce it ? I also found no information for a firmware update / upgrade (the drive was bought some months ago).

I recommend you contact Toshiba technical support regarding your concern; perhaps they have a similar tool.

Thanks for your answer.

Good to know, that it is not my fault ;-)

Based on my Lenovo support experience, I keep my fingers away from any company support. I will replace the drive with one which is better supported (HD / SSD - if I found some informations, which I should take and which has a long life).

I have no idea if OpenBSD has a similar utility but on FreeBSD you would use sysutils/ataidle (quick test with pkg_add revealed no OpenBSD package) to turn off the APM features on the drive and the head parking with it.

Thanks for your answer.

The atactl command itself includes the option apmdisable and setidle / setstandby but as it looks now, none has a effect (I will give it a try during night).

Same here on NetBSD: apmdisable hasn't worked for me. What worked for me on NetBSD was

Code:
atactl wd0 apm set 253
For reasons unknown, numbers higher than 253 have not worked. Try that on your flavor of BSD - also experiment with the actual number ...

Thanks for your answer and the idea, let's call the question as solved.

The correct command (depends only on the drive) on OpenBSD is

Code:
atactl sd0 apmset 253

It is because they are not there / not implemented in NetBSD / OpenBSD (the information is from the man page). You can use 0 - 126 which allowes the drive to go to standby and 127 - 253 which doesn't allow the drive to go to standby.

With the above setting I have reound 3 Load Cycle Counts per round 30 minutes.

3 LCCs per 30 min is still high - it should be 0. In a desperate attempt, you could run a script in an xterm keeping the hd busy (toy around with the sleep argument)

Code:
$ while true; do touch /tmp/touch.txt; echo -n .; sleep 10; done

Thanks for the tip. I let it at the moment as it is because for now I don't know, whether I keep the hardware or not (I also don't use it at the moment). If yes, I will give it a try.
