I have the impression, that the ssd is not as fast as i would expect it to be, e.g. launching libreoffice still takes 5-6 seconds (with cpu on max speed, i.e. 2,8 GHz). Granted, my hardware is from 2011, but i think it should perform a bit better. OTOH, when i upgrade to a newer snapshot, i download the files in advance to "/5.5/amd64" and run the update directly from the ssd; unpacking the tarballs then feels very fast.

Of course disk read/write speed numbers would be much better than feelings, and checking ports, i found some (old) disk benchmarking tools -- but i don't know which tool(s) is appropriate for the job. Can you recommend some? I also thought about alingment errors in my partition layout, resulting in / being fast, but /usr and /home to be slower. If you spot any obvious flaw, please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
drm

I installed OpenBSD 5.4 amd64 about 3-4 months ago on new computing node we got at work with 64 cores, 256GB RAM and of course SSD. The disk performance was abysmal. It took literally 5 minutes to move ports tar ball from tmp to /usr. Since the server had to go quickly into production I had no stamina to do anything OpenBSD related so I just put RedHat on it. For the record entire core network infrastructure in my Lab runs OpenBSD.

softdep is not the only mount option that can speed up disk access. There is also an option called noatime.
From mount(8)
Code:
noatime
Do not update atime on files in the system unless the
mtime or ctime is being changed as well. This option is
useful for laptops and news servers where one does not
want the extra disk activity associated with updating the
        atime.
With an SSD disk it probably will not make much difference, but with "spinning rust" disks it makes a difference.

Thank you both for your answers.

So i guess it's the fault of ffs then? Are there any reliable tools for access speed measuring?
