Default QNX

seems we need some new sections as this doesn't really fit anywhere else

Anyone familiar with QNX ?

I've just started a new job which runs QNX on a few systems and i've never heard of it before or had any experience with it.

I don't need to know much to do my job but i'd like to learn more about it if it's going to help me out in my later careers.

Just this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QNX

basically a real time os with a little unix-like thrown in, microkernel and support for various arches.

It's a microkernel, commonly used in embedded environments.. satellites, etc..

There was an old floppy based demo disk of it that circulated many communities, sadly QNX isn't interested in the workstation market anymore.

The kernel was open sourced by them recently as well, but you're likely using a customized proprietary version..

Still have that floppy demo somewhere in the attic, but used to boot the live CD demo from within Windows.

QNX, retail 49.99 Dollars was a long time the best alternative for Unix-like OS, and it is a real-time OS. Speaking of the days of SCO-Unix or Interactive it had not the merited success given the low price.

Some fast drivers for cards as the old Matrox'es...

Mostly used now in fab/processing/manufacturing, well ..., where RT matters.

Should re-check, or, after a couple of beers, order (Geez!) a license.
Had almost anything I needed, but FLOSS.

Very good, rock stable RTOS UNIX, also with a great GUI called phonon (ph in CLI to start), generally used in embedded and tiem critical environments (airport for example), I really liked it, but its not usable as a general purpose desktop unfortunelly, althou you can put pkgsrc.org on it

You may also check my site, you will find some links to QNX there.

Linux is not UNIX! Face it! It is not an insult. It is fact: GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not UNIX”.

I had absolutely NO intentions on using it as a desktop OS ... i downloaded a version of QNX from their site and i had a bit of a play. Seems there's a lot of development tools on it which seem pretty easy to use.

If it's only used on embedded products, it must be a very specialised field, right? good $$$ ? Might be a nice direction to take!

wow! is QNX still going? I haven't looked at this in yonks! Was a brilliant OS, started to use it and BeOS around the same time. Loved them both but just lost interest in them......must rectify that.
