Try launching your X session with startx(1) instead of logging through XDM (are you?), and check whether the problem still persists or not: XDM may be failing at giving /dev/console's ownership back to logged $USER, thus screwing the capability of any terminal emulator to read/write to the virtual console buffer.
Were this the case, usually configuring the first available virtual screen as 'ttyE0' instead of 'console' in /etc/ttys sorts the issue out
