Default I've read the installation guide...but!

whether or not wireless will be working on my compaq presario m2000 laptop, IT WORKS UNDER PCBSD BY DEFAULT if that means anything...

Also, I plan on installing kde4 from packages...

will a gui network manager come with the installation?

I'm going to try my hand at it either way...but I'm just curious...

AFAIK PCBSD is a repackaged FreeBSD, if wireless works under PCBSD it should work under FreeBSD.

What do mean with 'gui network manager' ?

There are a whole heap of annoying gui network mismanagers bundled with all sorts of systems.

I am happy to reassure you that you will find none of these monstrosities foisted upon you in FreeBSD. Networking is neatly handled by /etc/rc.conf and the ifconfig utility.

If you really want one of these, seek psychiatric help. In the meantime, you may find something suitable in /usr/ports/net .

No, you're thinking of DesktopBSD. PCBSD is a pretty serious fork.

I don't believe that's right, they use a vanilla FreeBSD kernel... so it's a distribution, not a fork.

Really, I kinda wish people would stop making "distributions" like that... it's Linux-like in nature, all the other BSD derivatives maintain their own kernel and userlands..

PCBSD created a OS X (dmg) style (PBI) package format... that's about it

PC-BSD is much more than that. It has put a lot of work into configuring the system so that newbies can use it without going through all of the stuff that vanilla FreeBSD requires. The original question is but one example. FreeBSD gives you the tools, but PC-BSD gives you a system that is pretty much ready to use. That can be rather important, and it not all that trivial.

I'm no fan of either PBIs or of PC-BSD, since I know the FreeBSD ropes very well. But to brush it off as unimportant is seriously shortsighted.

(Last I checked, PC-BSD was a packaged version of FreeBSD, so everything that works on PC-BSD will work on FreeBSD, and vice versa. It is not a distribution.)
