Default LCD Screen Resolution

Hello,

The motherboard of my AMD 64 bit PC failed, so I connected the LG Flatron L194WT-SF monitor to my old PC with a Matrox video card, but cannot get anything better than 800x600 resolution. I am running FeeBSD 8.2 (was using OpenSolaris on the newer PC.) Is there any simple way to fix this?

It could be that Matrox doesn't support DDC2/3 and/or your LCD monitor doesn't support DDC1.

DDC is an i2c bus that allows bidirectional communication between your monitor and the video card, it is needed for the driver to determine the maximum supported resolution.

If you can find an old Xorg.0.log from your newer system, you can find the Modeline and Vert/Horiz sizes and copy them into a xorg.conf on your older system.

I'm not sure if the MGA driver is xrandr 1.2 compliant but, if it is, you can try creating and adding a mode to the monitor.

xrandr --newmode "1280x1024_60.00"  109.00  1280 1368 1496 1712  1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DVI-0 "1280x1024_60.00"
xrandr --output DVI-0 --mode "1280x1024_60.00"
The modeline was generated with cvt. You can try the same for whatever resolution you want. The output name varies from driver to driver, but you can confirm what the output name is by simply running 'xrandr'.

  • Google and download the manual/docs for the LG Flatron L194WT-SF monitor
  • Look for the the horizontal and vertical sync values in the manual, and add these in the monitor section of your Xorg.conf
