Default can't get out of twm - any escape?

After finally managing install and (with help) get twm working, I started experimenting with commands.

Don't know what I did at one point, but am stuck in twm now.
Exit worked for getting the windows away partly (all colors and icons are away) but the X11 doesn't shut.
Shutdown -h now or exit or logout... nothing works.

The screen I see has text starting with
last pid: 1762; load averages (etcetera)
and has the cursor on a blank spot after which (next line) is
PID USERNAME (etcetera)
pressing esc shows
Command not understood

Any way of getting out?
I read that BSD should never be simply turned off by the power button.
