Default Can't turn mixerctl all the way down

On OpenBSD 4.8 release with a ICH4 AC97 card I can't turn down outputs.hp all the way. It goes down to 131,131 but no further.

# mixerctl outputs.hp=1
outputs.hp: 131,131 -> 131,131

I've tried all other outputs in mixerctl but none change the volume, just hp and hp.mute. Any ideas?

Welcome!

Perhaps you haven't read it, or perhaps you have. Either way, it is worth repeating what is stated in Section 13.1 of the official FAQ:
Quote:
The controls of an audio device may be labeled differently. For instance, there might not be an outputs.master as above, but there is an outputs.outputs which does the same thing. Usually the controls have a meaningful label, but sometimes one must simply try different settings to see what effect each control has.
While I understand your frustration, unfortunately, the only answer anyone will be able to suggest is simply to experiment. You can post the output of mixerctl(1), but all anyone can do is simply look at the list & make suggestions which you may have already tried.

As for options:
  • you can perform an exhaustive test of these controls, or...
  • you could install a snapshot of -current (which is currently 4.9-beta...), & see if this provides the control desired.
There really isn't much more anyone can suggest. Good luck.

Yep I've read that and as I stated no other outputs in mixerctl have any effect besides hp and hp.mute.

I was thinking about updating to current to see if it was fixed too, but I had some problems when I went current before because I was using packages that were looking for a different version of Xlib (or something similar). Makes sense. My question is, is there a way to go current without using ports? Or have I got this all backwards?

...only if you don't need any application which is in the packages/port system.

As discussed in Section 15.4.1 of the FAQ, mixing versions of the installed operating system with different versions of the packages/ports system is not recommended nor supported.

If you do decide to upgrade, please take the time to study:Good luck.

Going current is easy. Make sure you read:

http://www.openbsd.org/faq/current.html

For changes you should be aware of, and be sure to run

sysmerge -s http://<your.mirror>/pub/OpenBSD/snapshots/<arch>/etcXX.tgz

and then once that's complete, run:

pkg_add -u

That'll ensure everything is in order as long as you grab everything from the same mirror.
