Public hotspots usually redirect to a custom sign-in page using the router's DNS so try opening a browser and then run
Code:
# sh /etc/netstart

Captive portal. Usually this is done by http redirection. Something or somebody must try to access some http server by unsecured connection. Firefox does this by connecting to http://detectportal.firefox.com/success.txt in background. I sometimes use http://httpforever.com/ when I want to trigger this manually.

thanks for the quick answers ! it's working now ! I also realized if you put the wifi name between ' signs it works... no password needed since it's an open network

this is my /etc/hostname.iwm0

join 'free wifi hotel xxx'
dhcp

What was the problem then? If you post your solution then it may be helpful for others.

The man page suggests using double quotes. I use an SSID with a space in the name and double quotes work for me in /etc/hostname.iwm0.
