@DraconianTimes
I run FreeBSD (yes I know this is OpenBSD thread), on ThinkPad X300 and averything works smooth. ThinkPad X301 has little newer Intel platform, so you must only check OpenBSD support for these: GS45 chipset (with X4500 graphics), dunno if X301 has the same sound card as X300, but X300 has Azalia A1984A card which is supported by OpenBSD (dmesg part below). azalia0: codecs: Analog Devices AD1984A, AT&T/Lucent/0x1040, using Analog Devices AD1984A As for WiFi, newerX301 has 5100 Wireless. Also check these threads: http://www.mail-archive.com/misc@ope.../msg79540.html If you want to be sure that it will work, get X300 with GS965 chipset (X3100 graphics) and 4965AGN Wireless.

The BSD's seem to REALLY like all IBM/Lenovo's very much, take a live cd with you to the store and boot up, check dmesg. If the sales guy says anything or otherwise, hammer him with (tech) questions about "compatability" or whatever, brush off his BS (unless he has something non-salesy like to say that is of benefit) and try to get it booted with a livecd.
Worse comes to worse, ask for a person that CAN help, (technician) if he too is uncapable or worse uncouth, i would leave (hopefully your at a computer store NOT Staples, Futureshop or London Drugs) and goto a real computer store.

This is not quite true. Older IBM manufactured Thinkpads are most likely to work, but a number of newer Lenovo models have been problematic. When attempting to determine what models (Lenovo, or any other manufacturer...), are supported & to what degree, it is always prudent to search through the archives of the official misc@ mailing list first.
Also note that manufacturers also tend to change components during the lifetime of any model. Just because some dmesg(1) output posted to misc@ states someone's success with a particular model, take the information as being pliable. Newer units may be different. |

I have posted all my dmesg's from my t43, t60, t61, t61 and t500 to this forum, all were very well supported, all my essentials worked great, better than any other laptop(s) i have had running OpenBSD. I must say the PCMCIA slots on the newer ones are flimsy, i grab the left side of mine to pick it up (t60, t61 and t500) and they all felt WAY to soft for an IBM/Lenovo. OpenBSD on my last Macbook was great too the Dell's seem to like OpenBSD as well ...

I finally decided on a Thinkpad X61s and found a fair deal on one (£440) from a reputable seller on our favourite auction site. Core2Duo 1.4GHz, 160GB HDD, 3GB RAM plus a docking station and a year remaining on Lenovo warranty. Will post a dmesg once it arrives later this week.
