Question Hot pluggable hardware detection.

What is the mechanism for detection of new USB or eSATA devices?

If I plug a USB device into an "on the motherboard" USB2 port, OpenBSD detect the hardware properly. If I plug a USB device into a USB hub no detection takes place until I unplug the hub and then plug it back in.

dmesg produces no messages when a device is plugged into either of my USB hubs nor plugged into the eSATA port.

eSATA detection only happens at boot.

Any guidance is appreciated.

Hello, and welcome!

Based only on the information you've provided, it seems you have hubs that do not report device attachments, but respond to scans at boot time. If that's not the case -- if, for instance, other OSes perceive the attachments automatically -- then you should report the problem. The closest thing I've found looking through the misc@ mailing list for similar issueis an informal problem report regarding all USB hotplug attachments, hubs were not involved. In that instance, the OP reported a rumour that the issue was fixed in a BIOS release for his workstation that was no longer publicly available.

Regarding eSATA, Jonathan Gray (jsg@) stated in 2010:

There is currently no support for native sata hotplug in OpenBSD, so this is expected.
I have not seen any announcement of a change to this.

Thanks for the information on eSATA.

I'll pull the dmesg info on these hubs and file a bug report.
