Default Home directories suddenly missing in Samba

I've been using Linux and FreeBSD for some time now and this is a first. Have not found help elsewhere for this issue so if someone has a clue please help:

The users' home directories in Samba suddenly were missing. They no longer show up in their Windows My Computer as H: drive and on the server trying to link to smb://server/homes. I just get "The file or folder smb://server/homes does not exist." Shared in http://localhost:901/shares as follows:
path /usr/home
force group (group that is used by all users)
read only yes
browseable yes
available yes

Have used Restart All in Samba Status. What else should be done?

Can you post the actual config file ?

  • In the Windows "Network neighborhood" or whatever it is called, do you still see the Samba server listed?
  • On the Samba server, are the user home directories still there?
  • After raising the Samba debug level, do the logs give any clue?
  • IF you run testparm on the Samba configuration file, does it find any errors?
  • Are both nmbd and smbd running?

Do as J65nko directed and then check your log files on the samba server.

My box no longer uses Samba but the log files were stored as log.nmbd and log.smbd in /var/log/.

Some how I think making heads or tails of the log files and documentation is 70-80% of the war on NFS and Samba problems...

I had a similar problem caused by a shouting argument between servers and clients, only way I found it was the server logs showing Windows XP giving the server a rabbit punch :|

Default Other directories still working

It is not webmin but the other one.

Other shared directories are still working through Samba... just not the Home for each user. When clients login to the network/domain they should automatically - and used to - get an H: drive which would automatically be their profile and their My Documents from the Windows XP running on their PCs. Now they only see the other shared folders with common files for the network.
