Default 6.2 install failure; mpii0: mpii_scsi_cmd_tmo

Hi all,
I have the following machine:
Intel Xeon E3-1230v6 - 4-Core 3.50GHz 8MB
Supermicro X11SSH-CTF motherboard
10GbaseT X550
Intel C236 chipset
2 SSD 960GB

My installation fails (tried a couple of times) and it fails at different stages (when accessing HD) with the same error: mpii_scsi_cmd_tmo

I captured some photos from boot if it could help.

Thanks a lot!

I've looked at all 6 images, but do not see the error. Could you post the failure message?

I am sorry for being unclear!

The install process starts and it works until I reach the partitition step, I choose auto and press enter.
After that nothing happens for a long while and finally the message:
mpii0: mpii_scsi_cmd_tmo
shows up on the screen in blue and after that nothing happens.
Another time when I tried it passes the partitition step normally and all works fine until the file set step.
I choose file sets and press enter and then it feezes and after a while the same message shows up:
mpii0: mpii_scsi_cmd_tmo
and after that nothing happens.

I hoped that the images would help in some way, but you are right I can not find an error there either.

The message is produced by a printf in the mpii(4) driver software, indicating a SCSI command timeout. The message should also name the device that timed out.

There is one change to the driver module (src/sys/dev/pci/mpii.c) since 6.2, in -current, but it appears to be unrelated to your problem.

Can you disable the RAID controller in BIOS, and use your drives without it? If so, that might circumvent the problem.

Ok, thanks, I will have a look and try to disable the raid.

I disabled RAID and tried again, tried to changed some settings and tried again.
Every time I still get the same error at the partitition stage:
mpii0: mpii_scsi_cmd_tmo

I'm sorry that you are still having trouble.

There was an incomplete bug report posted to the bugs@ mailing list in 2016 that matches your symptoms. As it was incomplete, there was no follow-up.

The code that manages this timeout was introduced in 2010. Here is the discussion thread on the tech@ mailing list about it.

The pictures from that bug report look exactly the same as the problem I have.

A complete bug report should be possible. My guess is that you would need to install to other storage, such as a USB-attached device, in order to collect a full dmesg and any requested diagnostic information.
