How to make DesktopBSD detect re0?
Hi,
I need to find out how to make DesktopBSD use the 're0' driver. The thing is that I'm in love with FreeBSD, but can't get my head around making X work ... so I'm experimenting with PC-BSD and DesktopBSD (and prefer the latter). My pc is based on a Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R motherboard which sports dual Realtek 8111C chips for ethernet. What's odd is that PC-BSD recognizes these, but DesktopBSD does not. I haven't yet found out whether FreeBSD does or not (I know: poor research; I beg your pardon). Searching for DesktopBSD and Realtek and that Gigabyte board returns no relevant results. Help! I need a bit of hand-holding; I need to find out how to make DesktopBSD use the 're0' driver, but I don't know whether it's included in a standard install but just isn't loaded, or else where and how to get it -- especially without, you know, a network connection. Edit: Forgot to mention: DesktopBSD is the v1.6 DVD version pulled from their site last week.

The re driver has been around since FreeBSD 5.1 according to its manual page, which also states how to set it up ;-)
So it should be included unless DesktopBSD does strange things with their LKMs. Modern FreeBSD at least, has it built into the kernel (PC-BSD uses a custom kernel conf). If DesktopBSD doesn't seem to have it: Code:

Thanks for the reply! I don't expect you to be an expert on DesktopBSD, but I do expect DesktopBSD to be not totally unlike FreeBSD. I've looked into your hints; here's the outcome copied :

Six weeks ago I tested a FreeBSD 7.1 BETA snapshot, it detected my 're0' NIC but it didn't work.
Only when I used tcpdump on 're0' it started to work. On the FreeBSD mailing lists there are more reports about problems with the 're' driver.

Okay thanks for the info. I'm downloading the first 2009 snapshot and will try to install it this evening.
I'm not glad to hear of the re0 support problems; I spent a good deal of time trying to select components that would work with FreeBSD. Turns out I did a less than perfect job.

My, how interesting! I've just downloaded, burnt, and installed the first 2009 snapshot ("uname -a" reports "FreeBSD desktopbsd 7.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE #22: Sun Jan 4 03:52:16 UTC 2009"). At the first boot, I checked to see if the network card was there, and it wasn't. I've got both IP and Ethernet over Firewire as well as a PLIP network interface, but ... no Realtek or 're0' device.
Curiously, "dmesg" does detect this: Code:

Hmm, I seem to have trouble rebuilding my kernel; there were a whole lot of "undefined reference to `many different bits'" messages.
I wonder if I have all the /usr/src files? Does 434Mb in 39000 files sound about right, or short of the mark? (Yeah I know, I'm a noob... ) Of course, I can't just update (download) the /usr/src from the 'net, nor can I copy it from the install DVD which I kinda hoped. Hum. End of story, it seems.
