generally the same way you booted off the FreeBSD install disk.
0/ boot computer 1/ enter boot menu 2/ insert disk into DVD-ROM drive 3/ choose to boot off that drive 4/ let the installer load kernel and launch installer as directed If you reboot with a bootable disk in the drive, such as a CD, DVD, or Floppy it will usually be booted by the computer automatically unless your boot order is set to prefer hard drives instead.

In the case of Microsoft, they boot to CD/DVD but you have to hit enter or it will continue to boot the Hard drive. It was added back at win98 as people forget to remove CDs and hose up system boots.
So you do need to watch for the "To Boot from CD press any key" Then you can move on. |

More device drivers? Changes in system files? It's hard to know when you have no output other than "Extracting files...".

No, at the first boot is just starts a simple "sysinstall" utility, on the second boot is starts a nicer graphical shell, and on the third it's full-blown Windows.
It probably doesn't start a graphical shell the first time around for performance reasons, although I'm not sure about that... |

Off topic I'm sure, but thought this was cool.
During the graphical part of the XP install if you hit shift+F10 you get a command line, from which you can run taskmgr and other utilities. In task manager you can do a run and click browse and browse your computer while installing. |

In pre-Vista it's 3 stages. Sysintall,GUI installer,and wintendo first boot.
In Vista it's 2 stages. GUI installer (this merges the two first stages into one) and wintendo first boot. |
