Opera 10.60 and OpenBSD 4.7 amd64
Hello,
I tried to install Opera 10.60 on my OpenBSD 4.7 amd64 system. My window manager is gdm and my desktop manager is Gnome 2.28. I failed to make Opera work. So I downloaded the FreeBSD version, thinking it would be the most compatible version with OpenBSD (maybe my mistake is here ?). I extracted the archive, modified the install script a little to avoid a loop (the "read" command have a different syntax on OpenBSD), and installed Opera without any further problems. Everything looked like Opera installed successfuly. However when I try to launch Opera, nothing happens. If I run the command "opera" in a terminal, I get the following message : Code:
Abort trap Could someone give me some advices on how to install Opera 10.60 properly ? |

OpenBSD's Linux/FreeBSD binary emulation layer is only for i386, and, it's mostly unmaintained, given the recent events at the c2k10 hackathon, if nobody steps up they'll probably be removed entirely in a few releases.
You can't run Opera on OpenBSD/amd64, not unless they release a native version. There was originally a focus on binary emulation early on in the project, but as of late, this has been rethought.. as Theo de Raadt said, this is a source code world. http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=127836896111695&w=2 Last edited by BSDfan666; 4th August 2010 at 07:20 PM. Note; even if you were running i386.. it seems you weren't entirely aware of the fact that binaries from other operating systems aren't usually going to run, OpenBSD does offer this functionality on specific platforms as mentioned above (..see compat_linux(8) and compat_freebsd(8)).
The similarities between OpenBSD and FreeBSD do not extend to full native binary compatibility, they are separate projects. |

Thank you.
Actually I was thinking that the FreeBSD applications could be run on OpenBSD without any problem. I guess I was wrong |
