Default Dovecot log file location?

Hello everyone,

Dovecot failed to start. I am looking for the log file to see the error. Can anyone tell me where it is?

I know nothing about dovecot, but maybe this can help:

Is there a log within the dovecot directory? I feel as if, on FreeBSD, there were logs within /usr/local/etc/dovecot. That install was also heavily customized.

Dovecot reports via syslog(8). You can find messages it produces while running in /var/log/messages.

But when dovecot fails to start, it may not log anything. If so, use # rcctl -d start dovecot to debug the rc.subr(8) daemon startup script.
