Default Why are these forums relatively dead?

Provocative title, I know...

They're not dead by any means, I just wanted to get your attention. I remember BSDforums back in the day, and if my memory serves me it was much more active than these forums are now. I want to speculate as to why.

Has the user-base of BSD decreased? Are there less new users of BSD now? Does everyone just use reddit these days?

I like small-ish communities like this because it's easier to get to know individual users and develop non-forum relationships. I still regularly chat with people I met as a result of BSDforums (BSDnexus forums too!). It seems easier to get lost in the crowd on sites like reddit. So what's the deal, DaemonForums?

J65nko is right. But I have to say that although the volume is lower here the content and quality is usually better.

J65nko may be right - the FreeBSD forums may be a big factor... FreeBSD has the largest user base out of {Free|Open|Net}BSD, so it'd be natural that more traffic is directed at their forums.

I, too, recall the BSDForums days, and the number of new posts/replies dwarfed those here. If I'm not mistaken, the early days of this forum were a lot busier, too. But roddierod hit it on the head, too - we do have low traffic, but the signal-to-noise ratio is astronomical, ESPECIALLY compared to other forums.

Do something about it! Come here more often

Besides, we're still more active than BSDNexus and ttf combined

I'd forgotten about FreeBSD Forums. And no Open or Net sections over there! Which is understandable, but kinda stinks. Official forums seem a bit silly when there is great documentation and mailing lists.

And if you haven't noticed, Carpetsmoker, I have been coming here! For a couple of days, at least...

Lol, I think your new user title reflects your new user title, but not your posts.

And you have added to the knowledge base of the BSDs.

No longer are you a zombie.

You are now a squirrel.

I like quiet , simple , clean forums .. daemonforums is on top of the list .. I wouldn't be exaggerating when I say most often I find solutions and benefits here more than elsewhere (including marc&gmane)

Thanks for offering such a space.

I really appreciate the fact that this forum caters to a variety of BSD flavours. I regularly check in here for information. First rate!

Maybe this forum is quite empty because *BSD users experience less problems with their machines and are too busy windsurfing, climbing or mountain biking than debugging their problems online

Well, that's just what happened to me.
I choosed that Sun Workstation I bought in the OpenBSD certified compatible machines list.

No surprise, no mess, except those from my mistakes

Yes, though I find the OpenBSD FAQ and MAN pages to be the very best documentation for any OS that I have used, there are times when it is very helpful to learn how another user has applied a configuration or a process. As in the observation above by hitest, this place has offered me some solid solutions and clarification on a number of occasions when I needed some guidance. Many thanks to those who have contributed!

Sincerely,

thomasw
