Greetings all,
thank you all very much for the response, especially ibara's detailed explanation, and albator's note regarding "not configured". I am looking specifically on Dell's, I have E6410, on which everything works, but it has an NVIDIA card, which although allegedly supported by nv(4) driver was stubbornly refusing to work with anything except vesa(4) driver. So, I will now look into the database for similar models, but if someone has a recommendation, I would appreciate it. I know that people generally like Thinkpads, but I do not like their component blacklisting. Again, thank you. Kindest regards, M |

Hi LeFrettchen,
sorry, I made an assumptions that everyone knows my needs. ;-( Regarding your questions, as a preliminary matter, I use the laptop mostly for word-processing and associated tasks, e-mail, Internet research, (professionally), watching movies, listening to music, and light programming/scripting (as hobbies). Based on that, I think that features like good keyboard and display with resolution of at least 1600x900 are paramount. Since when not traveling, I attach the laptop to an external monitor, a display port or HDMI would be nice since VGA appears to be disappearing from the external monitors; others e.g., i7 and lot of memory (16-32GB), are probably not necessary. Likewise no need for dual video card. 1. Since the title says laptop, yes, I am looking for a laptop. 2. Please see above. I think that the Latitude line is good enough. 3. Let us say yes. I would think that any laptop will also dual boot Win 7, but it is by no means a requirement. Yes, I think that 64 bit Intel/AMD architecture is preferable. Not all Dell touchpads work. Just fyi. You'd need an external mouse. I use a Logitech M330.

Greetings all,
I did some more investigation and narrowed my choice to E6440 and E7440. Anybody has an experience with either one? Kindest regards, M |

Hi Prevet,
this is a great idea. You would not remember where you have read oabout it, by a chance? Kindest regards, M |

Hi Prevet,
you sent me on a goose chase; but I found nothing. Now I know the reason. ;-) Kindest regards, M |

Hi Prevet,
I do not dislike Lenovo per se, I had some before; I just do not like their whitelisting policy and think that Dell Latitude and above are better value. Kindest regards, M |
