Default Guide to build a modular kernel.

I'm looking for a guide how to build a modular kernel. In my opinion the NetBSD guide only covers how to build a GENERIC kernel but perhaps I'm wrong.
Questions I have are for instance how are the modules built, are they installed automatically somewhere or do they have to be copied and so on.

Cheers
