Scientific Linux is sweet
CentOS 6 isn't out yet and i needed a Red Hat 6 based system to do stuff.
I came across Scientific Linux, the name sounds kinda cheesy but don't be put off by it, there is nothing particularly scientific about this distribution other than the people who maintain it ;-) Its practically 100% Red Hat. give it a try, its really good! btw, i am using it with Rpmforge and Epel repositories. http://www.scientificlinux.org/ |

@ephemera
are you 100% sure it's a genuine copy of RHEL? cause last time I heard it's heavly edited and tweaked to suite there needs! the awesome thing in all this is the new Oracle Linux 6! see for your self how this one is a genuine dublicate of RHEL! http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20110214#news http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/...stallation.php |

Actually, there are some differences. I believe the Centos group supports many more packages from both RHEL and outside vendors/repositories. SL supplies Gnome, KDE and icewm DE/WM's. If you want XFCE4 you will need to look at Centos.

CentOS and SL are both build out of RHEL SRPMS are supposed to be 100% binary compatible with RHEL releases. So, there isn't much difference between the two - what works on RHEL works on CentOS and SL and what works on CentOS also works on SL.
SL is nowhere near as popular as CentOS, I don't know why (not that it makes any difference). CentOS6 isn't even out yet so the point is moot. Right now if u want a RHEL6 system and don't wanna pay $$ for it, SL6 is the only option. Update: Oracle linux 6 free!? Hmm, i will have to find out more about it... They're all the same system, bundling the same kernel and and the same GNU software.
The init scripts are slightly different, that is all, this is Linux. |

@ephemera
Not at all when you understand that Linux is just a kernel Oracle offers a transaction package from RHN to OLN *sighs* that's why RedHat started to hide there patches within the kernel so no one could figure it out http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/03...ode_packaging/ |
