I have an AMD Athlon(tm) X4 870K Quad Core Processor, Radeon HD6950, 8 gbs ram. I use mpv for HD movies, most of them play flawlessly. certain .mkv ones are a little choppy in spots. In mpv.conf I have profile = gpu-hq which works in mpv 29.1

Thanks for the suggestions. Yesterday I was playing with a lot of settings and I have near perfect playback with this config. Just a little 'hiccup' every now and then.

Code:
vo=gpu
geometry=50%
audio-channels=2
#scale=ewa_lanczossharp
#cscale=ewa_lanczossharp
video-sync=display-resample
#interpolation
#tscale=oversample
#cache=yes
demuxer-readahead-secs=20
demuxer-max-bytes=41943040
demuxer-max-back-bytes=41943040
gpu-context=x11egl
#hwdec=vaapi
hwdec=vdpau
