Default Xfce4 and desktop update [gamin problem]

Hi!

After installing Xfce4 with all the required dependencies and started Xfce4 after a while I've noticed that the desktop is not updating when adding/removing files or folders from it. I've searched the forum and have been googling and I found out that I need fam/gamin installed so that my desktop updates properly.

Now I have gamin installed with gamin-poller (not kqueue) but I don't see the service gam_server running. I can start it manually from the terminal, but after some seconds it stops by itself with no messages showing.

Can someone please tell me how to configure gamin with Xfce or point me to a guide/link for it?

Thanks!

You probably need to recompile x11-wm/xfce4-desktop with FAM support. FAM support is on by default, but if gamin didn't get pulled in then it probably wasn't compiled with the FAM option. The FAM option for x11-fm/thunar is off by default, so you may need to recompile it with the FAM option turned on. You don't need to (nor should you) start gamin manually. It is the responsibility of the application which uses it to spawn gamin processes.

Sorry, about that I was looking for a solution almost whole night in reading and reading with no success.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that now and post the result later

Everything is OK now! The problem was in x11-fm/thunar. I was so messed up that I forgot to check the thunar port. Now my desktop works as expected.

Thanks for your help!

Please use the search function. I posted the fix for this problem in two different threads over the past two months ago.

Yes, I saw those posts:
http://daemonforums.org/showthread.php?t=766
http://daemonforums.org/showthread.php?t=1522

Unfortunately the fix didn't work for me, that's why I started a new thread.
After I rebuild gamin with gamin-poller instead of kqueue, the problem was still remaining.

This is what I have done and my desktop updates correctly:
1. Started a fresh FreeBSD 7.0 minimal install
2. Get the latest ports tree
3. Install the xorg meta-port
When the xorg install finishes I saw that gamin is installed, but without asking me for any options (gamin-poller, kqueue), so I've deinstalled gamin-0.1.9_2 and installed it again, but this time with the gamin-poller option on. (thanks ninjatux for that )
4. cd /usr/ports/devel/gamin/ && make deinstall; make config; make reinstall clean;
5. Then installed the xfce4 port (/usr/ports/x11-wm/xfce4) and on every config screen shown I choose FAM options to be on
After the xfce4 install finishes, I recompiled the x11-fm/thunar port with the FAM option, because during the install there was no config screen shown for it.
6. cd /usr/ports/x11-fm/thunar && make deinstall; make config; make reinstall clean
7. pkgdb -uF

And that's what I did in general. The fix for me was step 6.

I always search the forum before asking questions
