Default Makefile Problem

Hi,

I downloaded a set of files from http://www.dk.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb....bin/compress/ and am currently trying to get the make file to compile. The makefile provided is as follows:

# @(#)Makefile 8.2 (Berkeley) 4/17/94
# $FreeBSD: src/usr.bin/compress/Makefile,v 1.8.18.1 2008/11/25 02:59:29 kensmith Exp $

PROG= compress
SRCS= compress.c zopen.c
LINKS= ${BINDIR}/compress ${BINDIR}/uncompress
MLINKS= compress.1 uncompress.1
WARNS?= 6

# XXX zopen is not part of libc
# MAN=zopen.3

.include <bsd.prog.mk>

when running the command make, it kept returning "*** missing separator. Stop." errors. I played around with it, and make seems to be happier with "include /usr/share/mk/bsd.prog.mk", however bsd.prog.mk uses the same form as above to include other files, and thus in turn causes the same missing separator errors, and of course this problem becomes recursive, as files call upon other bsd files, which call upon others.

Does anyone know whether this is a problem with my make progam? Or how this problem may be easily resolved?

Thank you,

BadWolf

Can you post the full error message/output of make?

The unaltered Makefile produces the following error:

Makefile:13: *** missing separator. Stop.

Where line 13 is the one concerning the include instruction. My altered Makefile, described above, produces the following error:

/usr/share/mk/bsd.prog.mk:4: *** missing separator. Stop.

Where again the make program appears to be complaining about the usage of a period before include, carrot brackets, and lack of directory listings.

Hi.

I created a small Makefile using ".include" and it worked with:
Code:
OS, ker|rel, machine: FreeBSD, 7.0-RELEASE, i386
make - ( /usr/bin/make Feb 24 2008 )
When I transferred that Makefile to a Linux box, named it BSDmakefile and ran GNU make, I got:
Code:
BSDmakefile:4: *** missing separator.  Stop.
I conclude that the standard FreeBSD make is not being used ... cheers, drl

Good catch.
I tried grep'ing the source for BSD make and couldn't find that particular error message, so I think you are right.
