I also had the same problem some time ago with the hda driver, everything worked fine on Windows, but with FreeBSD the audio CD didn't work. cdcontrol indicated everything was ok and it was playing a file, but no sound. Playing MP3's went ok.

I never investigated further since I just needed to run a quick test, but it may indicate this is a problem with the hda driver or a generic FreeBSD issue.

Do you have an audio connector between the CD drive and the sound card (or the sound chip on the motherboard)? Most likely windows does digital audio extraction, rather than piping it directly to the cd line on the sound card, which is what most CD players on FreeBSD/linux currently do.

xmms had an option to do digital audio extraction under linux a few years ago, but I'm not sure if it ever worked properly under FreeBSD.
