Default routing over a tunnel

hey, i'm not sure if this is the place for this as i'm not sure it's netbsd specific though i was lacking the capability to find any forums related to networking or unix networking in particular.

Hello, i've got a router (edge.chi.arknet.n0ah.org: 67.202.107.25) in
chicago with subnet 67.202.105.72/29 routed to it and it's tunneled to
(direct.ark.n0ah.org: 71.54.39.34) in NC. the tunnel end of chicago
is a 67.202.105.73 the tunnel end in NC is 67.202.105.72. i am
routing the /29 on the router to the sun server at the other side of
the tunnel. (well, ifconfig 67.202.105.72/29 -iface 67.202.105.73).
on the sun server i added a route to 67.202.107.25 as the real default
route of the sun server (so the tunnel session can communicate) then i
added a default route as 67.202.105.73. now all traffic on the sun
server in nc (ark.n0ah.org: 67.202.105.72) travels through the tunnel
and is routed in chicago. it works. the only problem is that the
bandwidth i'm getting is poor, both sides are capable of 3mbps down
and i'm only getting about 50kB/s both sides can pull 3mbps and the
router in chicago can push 3mbps. i'm fishing for some clues.

edit: i hosted a file on the router on an ip that is routed through
the tunnel and i get full 3mbps downloading it through the tunnel from
the router, but nothing that is routed over the internet through the
tunnel gives good performance, it all seems like 512kbit.

n0ah

ps. both ends are ultra netbsd 5.0.1 one is sparc64 the other is amd64
