Default Gimp 2.8 will feature single-window mode

From http://arstechnica.com/open-source/r...less-gimpy.ars

Quote:
The venerable GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is undergoing a significant transformation. The next major release, version 2.8, will introduce an improved user interface with an optional single-window mode. Although this update is still under heavy development, users can get an early look by compiling the latest source code of the development version from the GIMP's version control repository.

The old floating windows were not so bad with very big monitors. But this UI transformation and the implementation of MDI is definitely a good news.

It works well if you use a good WM, problem is most WM's aren't that good IMO (Especially the "MS Windows WM").

IIRC there already is some project based on the gimp which is made to look like photoshop (i.e. one window). I forgot the name though...

The GIMP fork you're most probably talking about is GIMPshop. It hasn't been updated in years (4, to be more precise).

Why do you think it has to do with the choice of WM?

Because your choice of WM will determine just how much GIMPs traditional interface throws you off. Windows (and most that default to) can be made better, by removing the task bar or telling it not to collapse multiple buttons into one menu.

I think I would prefer a single window if having to work in GIMP a heavy lot, but since it often "Merges" with my work flow, as I emulate a computers pre-emptive multitasking, the ability to array windows side by side is helpful: keep an eye on xyz while using GIMP. You can't do that with an interface like the old GIMPShop.

Freedom, of choice however, is a great thing in general.
