Did you install on bare metal or some kind virtual machine? How did you configure IP (dhcp or static). If you configure static I would check /etc/rc.conf and make sure you typed correct IP, netmask, and the gateway. I have mistyped few times gateway for example. I install FreeBSD about once a week and I have never seen anything crazy.
