Well some guys in the thread in aforementioned link said it works for them on 5_STABLE/RC3, so I guess it should work. Concerning the patches, just look at them and you will get the picture, something like:

patch </where/the/patch/is/ath-0.10.5.10-ieee80211.patch
cd /usr/src/sys/contrib/dev/ath
patch </where/the/patch/is/ath-0.10.5.10.patch
Also, in that thread it is being said it is recomended to also get the ppb-hotplug.patch for ppb(4) in order to be able to turn on/off the wifi card by using Fn-F2 on keyboard.
