OpenBSD, libc, and the original BSD have separate version numbers, lvlamb.

It's just serendipity that they are currently similar.

OpenBSD is a 13 year old fork from NetBSD, which was based on 4.4BSD Lite. The COMPAT_43 is for binary compatibility with an even older Berkeley distribution.

4.4-beta (as of last night, anyway) is using; that number is also unrelated to the OpenBSD release numbers.
