I found that running an external nameserver, a Pentium I20 Mhz, on my LAN gives faster DNS responses on my PIII 800Mhz workstation, then running a nameserver on the workstation itself.

BTW I use DJB's dnscache nameserver.
You don't need to be a genius to debug a pf.conf firewall ruleset, you just need the guts to run tcpdump
