Are you certain the backlight is actually being controlled? Try it on a black screen is the best way. If it, that's a bonus.

I confirm I used this command:

doas wsconsctl display.brightness=[VALUE EXPRESSED IN %]
And I realized by default the screen brightness was around 80%, I played a bit testing from 100% down to 20% and the screen was actually darker.
My personal pebcak was in the man page
wsconsctl(8) I couldn't find all the knobs you can operate with...
