Well. there was a enormous variety of advice out there in Google-land (and here). I did the easiest suggested fix, deleting the .Xauthority file in my home folder. It is apparently re-created at next login.

That did it..once....following login, I was back with the error.

I've got my wife's "old" G4 iBook and have attempted a variety of distributions on it. OpenBSD has a variety of little nagging items on this iBook, and I shall wander off and try another distribution. My main computer is a Linux machine that I built, currently running Linux Mint. I've wanted to try a Unix OS for quite a while...and had a few unsuccessful install attempts on my main computer, so this install has been a success of sorts. I'm learning - thanks for your help
