syspatch(8) has seemed like an unusual step to me. It's essentially sinking developer time into building binary patches for people who, for whatever reason, don't do it themselves (and for only two architectures at that).

You are probably not running OpenBSD for living. Even with only 15 production machines running OpenBSD syspatch has being an indispensable tool to my organization. Source patches which require kernel compiling can really tax remote anaemic machine used as firewall.
