Default Solaris 10 w/ Sun Ultra 60 - Graphical UI?

Hi all,

I'm new here, thanks for having me. My hobby is vintage Unix systems and this is the first Sparc system I've ever used, also the first time using Solaris.

Need some advice, I've installed Solaris 10 over the serial console as I don't have a keyboard or mouse on my machine. After installing the system it all seems fine in the console but I cannot work out how to start X. I've tried 'startx' of course, but it says command not found.

Any advice much appreciated,
Thank you

also - I have two different graphics adaptors and I've tried both, an xvr-500 (3dlabs wildcat) and xvr-300 (Radeon) I have tried both and re-installed Solaris both times without success. Still no Gnome desktop.

Hello, and welcome!

I haven't used (or touched) Solaris in decades, and don't recall anything about its X Windows environment at all.

A quick Google search found this, which may help:

Thanks for that. Someone contacted me recently and told me that apparently Solaris won't output anything on the graphics card unless it has a keyboard connected, it just goes into TTY mode. So yeah I guess I need to track down a keyboard! I was hoping to do everything over SSH & then use Synergy/Barrier KVM once into the GUI.

(I don't know about Solaris, but) possibly just a wireless keyboard USB adapter without having the actual keyboard present might be enough to do the trick?

When I installed Solaris 11.4 some weeks ago, only the base system was installed by the installer, but no Xorg. I had to install solaris-desktop with pkg to get a running Xorg/Gnome.

In addition, if using the motif display manager is not desiderable, one may also fall back to /usr/openwin/bin/xinit.

Or use a script like:
Code:
#!/bin/sh

trap '$HOME/.xinitrc; kill %1' USR1

(
     trap '' USR1
     exec /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0
) &

wait
Generating an ad-hoc X configuration with xorgconfig can be useful if the server fails to attach.

Could X11 forwarding over ssh represent a viable alternative?

That's because 11.4 only provides text installers (almost completely ditching anything related to desktop), but this didn't use to be the case up to 11.3, much less with SunOS 5.10.

Thanks all, I did solve this by getting a proper Sun keyboard. My GUI works now. It just wouldn't come up without the keyboard, it thought it was a headless server.
