Default New OpenBSD 7.2 crashes

I have an old ThinkPad X220 which was running -current. This morning I did a sysupgrade. The upgrade seemed to go OK but when I rebooted I was faced with a screen full of error messages.
Is there any way I can reverse what I've done or post a picture of the screen so someone with more knowledge than I have can offer some advice?

Thanks
Stan

Which -current? The 7.2 release kernels were built in September, and you may have been on a much more recent -current. If so, you've accidentally performed an inadvertent downgrade.

jggimi - If I have done that, is there any way to reverse it or do I have to reinstall?
Thanks

If you've done that -- and if that is the reason for your error/errors, then you must reinstall. There is no supported "downgrade" mechanism.

If you haven't done that, then perhaps you could post some information about those error messages? If you cannot post the contents of /var/log/messages, then post a photograph of the screen.

I tried to attach photos but I kept getting image to large messages.
Guess I'll just have to reinstall.

You could find somewhere else to post your photos -- such as one of the many free photo services, or, type in one of the error messages so that we can have a clue about your problem.

Not sure if I'm doing this correctly, but:

Thanks!

This is a uvm_fault(9) -- and from your photo appears to occur during the early part of the boot sequence. If so, this is unrelated to any possible "downgrade" as this occurs completely within the monolithic kernel.

I cannot tell you why this fault has occurred. I *can* tell you that your X220's BIOS is woefully outdated. You're system has version 1.20, and the most recent -- from 2018 -- is version 1.47. Updating your BIOS might solve the problem. (There's a downloadable CD image which can be burned and then booted, available here.)

For more information on your uvm_fault(9), check out the following OpenBSD man pages at https://man.openbsd.org:
  • uvm_fault(9)
  • pmap(9)
  • crash(8)

Just so I'm sure I don't download the wrong one, is this what I want:

BIOS Update Utility for Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP - ThinkPad

Thanks

No, that's a Windows executable. You want the bootable CD, the next file below. Burn that image to a CD and boot it from your X220. (Assuming you have the equipment and knowledge to do that.)

Edited to add: Unless you dual-boot your X220 with Windows, then you could use that program from Windows.

Problem is I don’t have a CD drive. Could I burn it to a USB flash drive instead.
Thanks

This is an El Torito boot image with 2048-byte sectors, usable in optical drives.

At one time I recall being able to extract a bootable MBR mass-storage image from inside one of these Lenovo ISOs, and I've just spent an hour trying to do so on your behalf without success.

Not clear if this was attempted:

Another option is to try a usb cdrom drive. I'm on the West Coast so lending you mine would be a challenge.

I tried it, then went in manually with hexdump, hexedit, split, and dd. This particular image does not have a valid MBR at sector 27, even though it has an MBR signature. I went through the image for quite a while, sector by sector, looking for alternate MBRs without success.

jggimi - Thank you for your efforts on my behalf. I do appreciate it. One last question if I may - I'm not sure I understand but are you saying that hooking up a USB-CDROM drive also wouldn't work? In ehich case what other options do I have to upgrade the BIOS?
Thank you

If you have a USB-attached optical drive, the x220 should be able to boot from it.

I received a suggestion that this problem is unrelated to BIOS level and may instead be an EFI implementation bug that was recently fixed after 7.2.

You might try a recent snapshot to see if you get improved results.
