Prometheus Rising
by Robert Anton Wilson

Publication date: 1983
ISBN: 1-56184-056-4

...began as Wilson's Ph.D. dissertation called "The Evolution of Neuro-Sociological Circuits: A Contribution to the Sociobiology of Consciousness". Wilson rewrote the manuscript for commercial publication, removing footnotes, improving the style, adding chapters and exercises, and sketching out diagrams for the illustrations.

I first read Prometheus Rising almost twenty years ago; I recall it as an amusing and intriguing introduction to thinking about human software development. For an alternative perspective from a different culture on what seems like the same model, one might have a look at Spiral Dynamics.

Additionally, some other popular models and perspectives:

Plato's tripartite theory of soul
Plato's five regimes

Id, ego and super-ego
Parent–Adult–Child model
Tripartite classification of authority
