VirtualBox
There is a preliminary port of VirtualBox for FreeBSD (see the -emulation list for the port; it is not in the tree yet). There are a very few of us who are discussing it on the FreeBSD site, and I though I would move it here to talk about it with friends. So please let's talk!
I have installed W2K Server, complete with all 80-some patches, and it is working well and stably. I'd put its speed somewhere between the very old VMware (faster) and the qemu family. It does work on a multiple-core CPU, in contrast to VMware. No tools seem to be available, so screen resolutions are very low (800x600); the Ethernet port seems to be OK. No benchmarking yet. Comments welcomed! |

I saw that, Oliver, but I have only 32-bit computers at the moment.
Do you know if the guest additions are available? Those drivers are very important, but they require their own set of kernel modules (which probably have not been ported yet). Sure, the base system is the palce to start, but man I'd love to have the additions. 16-bit color on an 800x600 screen is very irritating. |

Yes, I've tried VNC. I run into issues with differing screen resolutions that limits its usefulness (at least the versions I used).
What works best, actually, is simply to walk across the room to use a Windows box. With WinSCP and a remote shell, I can get by. I'd just rather have it on the same computer. The old VMware in ports is actually rather good, but its limitation to a single core is a PITA. |

I'd even pay good money for a proprietary solution, but there is none to be had. |
