Are all of your other ports (especially GNOME related ones) up to date?

I used csup last night, but I might try a portsnap tonight.

No real sense in that. I usually use portsnap to grab the ports tree initially, then use cvsup to update it regularly. That's been the most efficient method, in my personal experience. Cron it weekly, or somesuch, if you want. Remember, cvsup only grabs stuff you need, so you're not wasting much of the server's bandwidth to cvsup regularly.

Thanks for the advice to date. I looked at the FreeBSD gnome site, which had a stringent list of todos before contacting. One of those was run portupgrade -r. I did, it took a long time (about 4 days on my system, could probably be quicker normally, but I wasn't always available to attended ncurses menus).

Anyway, that did it.

I'm going to spend more time on portupgrade, it is lovely.

(edit - it was the FreeBSD Gnome site)

That's what I meant when I asked if your ports were up-to-date. Running csup or portsnap doesn't upgrade your already installed ports, only the ports tree. You must use either portupgrade or portmaster afterwards to actually upgrade your installed ports.

Lesson learned I think. I'm going to look at means of speeding up portupgrade now, as it did take a substantial amount of time.

This is unfortunate. Port maintainers should specify the appropriate versions of things in their dependency declarations in the Makefile so that the port build process will automagically upgrade any ports that need upgrading for the port you're trying to install to work properly.

Of course, I always do this for ports I maintain.
